A land weathering and salinization cause irreparable damage as well. The annual losses from soil erosion in Ontario are more than $100 million.

The acid rains are causing significant damage to nature, economy and human health. The United States is intensively polluting its own territory, as well as the Canadian environment. About 50% of acid rains falling in Canada come from the United States. Half of water reservoirs and woodlands suffer from acid rains in Canada.

The drinking water in Canada is under the threat of heavy pollution. There have been found a lot of chemicals in the Great Lakes that get there with industry and other waste water, as well as from the air. Many inorganic chemicals are not trapped in sand filters of water pumping stations. Thus, cadmium and mercury concentration is higher than normal in the drinking water of Toronto. That is why the activated carbon is used for cleaning. Such method is necessary until the problem is solved by removing toxins from the waters of the Great Lakes.

The major environmental problem in Canada is the preservation of the rich wildlife. Today its wildlife has significantly reduced. The newfoundland wolf, sea mink, otter, black-footed ferret, wild turkey, passenger pigeon, and rattlesnake have completely disappeared. With a territory enlargement the Canadian landscape is changing that leads to the disappearance of many animal species. Destruction of forests in British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec together with agricultural pesticides usage cause irreparable damage to the animal populations.
