Book review writing is an important type of assignments for many students. All professors ask to express an opinion about a book on the subject under the study and it does not matter what specialty the student has selected. This page will help you to write book reviews. Although the review does not necessarily contain all the components listed below, the most important thing is to make it interesting and literate.
The review of the book may include: bibliographic description of the product (author, title, publisher, year) and a short summary of the content; the impression from the book; a critical analysis and overview of the text (meaning of the title, analysis of the form and content, individual style of the writer); reasoned assessment of the work and personal reflection (summary and relevance of the book topic).
Writing a review should be an attempt to understand experiences from the book. It is possible to reach this aim with the knowledge of literature theory and detailed analysis of the work. The reader can say about the book “I like it or I do not” without evidence. A reviewer must carefully justify his opinion via deep and reasoned judgment. It is necessary to create such a book review that the reader receives the most understandable concept of the source supported with quotes from the text. Academic assignments may require a student to write one of the three types of reviews described below:
1. Positive review contains reviewer’s positive attitude to such an outstanding book. He should cite quotes taken from the text, which confirm that a book is worthy spending time on reading it.
2. Negative review has the opposite aim than the first type: author describes what aspects make the text poorly written and gives specific examples.
3. Neutral review is work, in which a person notes the publication of the book. Although this review type is easy to write including own viewpoint on the content of the original source, it may be not very interesting for the reader.
The main objective of review is to attract readers' attention to the ideas specified in your paper. However, students should not use such cliche, as “this work will not leave anyone indifferent”, “in the book there is love and hate, life and death”. Such general statements categorically harm a review making the reader consider it formal after the first sentence. If the paper is created this way, it means that the reviewer is not interested in the book. Therefore, it is not desirable to read it as there is no sense to get another portion of “ice and fire".
Thus, the method of writing reviews is clear. Firstly, reviewer determines what type of review to select (positive, negative or neutral one). Secondly, the writer reads the text making notes at once. Finally, he writes about what he absolutely liked or did not in the book with examples. The rest aspects are to be inserted as additional information, which should not be the main part of the work because the essence of a review is to draw attention to the text.
